ELECTRIC TRADE AT CHELFORD BLUE SALE
The main ring was packed to the rooftops on Saturday 8th March
2003 as Chelford confirmed itself as “The Home of the Belgian
Blues”.
The huge crowd witnessed a trade described by Marshall’s partner
and auctioneer Gwyn Williams as “electric – quite simply
the fastest trade I’ve seen at a Blue sale in years, with a
complete clearance of Pedigrees, and a record trade for Crossbreds!”
Prospective purchasers descended upon the Centre from all corners
of the UK, with over 200 registered prior to the sale.
Every Pedigree animal forward was sold, with 15 bulls making over
3000 gns, and 8 over 4000 gns with Navac Trident, by ‘Marsh
Blues Producer’ out of ‘Navac Nora’, the May 2001
born bull included within Cavan and Jean Maguire’s Navac herd
reduction sale, leading the trade, selling at 4600 gns to Dunmaglass
Estates, Inverness.

Bringlee Trimble |
Trident had not been shown the previous evening when judge, Peter
Whitlow, who dispersed his Peel herd at Chelford last year, awarded
the 37th Supreme Championship to Graham Brindley ‘Bringlee
Trimble’. He is a March 2001 born son of the renowned Championship
–winning ‘Alambic De Baillonville’ out of ‘Bringlee
Olga ET’, and travelled home to Erwood, Builth Wells with G
H P Jones who took him at 4500 gns.
Neil Pritchard of Norton Canon, Hereford, showing at Chelford for
the first time, saw his April 2001 – born ‘Norton Tiptop’,
1st in the Intermediate Bull class, make 4400 gns to L A Renshaw,
Hollington, Stoke-on-Trent, whilst Graham Brindley’s ‘Bringlee
Taragon’, by the all black ‘Park Nigerian’, made
4300 gns to John Green, Kidsgrove, Stoke.
Jane and Danny Wyllie’s Tamhorn herd usually produce something
nice. This time it was the March 2001 born ‘Tamhorn Thumper’,
by ‘Visconti De St Fontaine’, who made 4200 gns to R Harrop,
Youlgreave, Bakewell.

Champion Presentation |
A particular feature was the demand for top quality young bulls.
Ted Haste, from Shebbear, Devon, brought forward one to watch for
the future in ‘Pernod Tarquin’. Just 17 months old, born
in October 2001 and by Philliper de Remichampagne, he won the Junior
Bull Class, stood Reserve to the Champion, and found his way at
4000 gns to G I Francis, Newtown, Powys.
If anything, demand for females was just as strong. Maiden Heifers
were most in demand, with the superb March 2001 blue and white heifer
Park Turnmoil from A C & B Morgan, Pontardulais, Swansea, making
3100 gns to A E Neachell and Sons, Aldridge, W Midlands, whilst
W G Davies & Son of Hirwaun, Aberdare, Mid Glamorgan paid 2600
gns for another blue and white heifer from the same vendors, Park
Tit-for Tat.

Ted” took home the October 2001 born Hazelwood Tia, bred by
Doug Hazel of Chalton, Luton for 2200 gns, the heifer having been
awarded the Clive Godden Perpetual Trophy in memory of one of the
Breed’s long standing supporters.

Top price crossbred £6,520 |
Chelford Agricultural Centre re-affirmed its position as leading
auction centre for Belgian Blue crossbreds setting a new record
of £6520 in its 37th National Show and Sale.
The heifer that did the damage was “simply superb” ,
born in June 2002 and bred by Andrew Davies, Llangadog, Carmarthenshire.
A great deal of interest pre-sale culminated in frenetic bidding
ringside. Gerald David of Somerset on his first visit to Chelford
lost out to the show judges John and Debbie Madeley of Ross
on Wye, Herefordshire despite the heifer having not been shown!
Andrew Davies also took top call in the steer section at £2650
secured by Derek Winney, Madley, Hereford.
