Cowling calf man Andrew Ogden clinches debut Skipton title



Andrew Ogden, of Sandyforth Farm, Cowling, clinched his first-ever Skipton Auction Mart rearing calves championship at April’s monthly show. (Mon, Apr 18)

Mr Ogden, reserve champion in March, went one better at the latest renewal with a home-bred British Blue-cross bull calf by one of his own stock bulls, out of a Holstein Friesian dairy cow.

The youngster was bought for £390 by the man who judged it champion, Tony Binns, of Clint, Harrogate, who is a regular at the Skipton calf ringside, often purchasing from Mr Ogden.

Calf trade was extremely strong at what proved one of the best shows for some time, with 14 British Blue bull calves averaging £340 and 11 Limousin bull calves selling at an average of £307, with an overall rearing calves average of £196.24

Top price in show at £408 fell to another British Blue bull calf from DP Moore, Sowerby Bridge, acquired by J Verity & Sons, Middlesmoor.

Reserve champion was a British Blue-cross heifer calf from Geoff & Margaret Booth, Dowshaw Farm, Lothersdale, knocked down for £345 to MC Bland, Denholme.

In the Limousin classes, the first prize bull and heifer both came from G Pickersgill & Son, of Hawksworth, Guiseley. The bull calf sold for £370 and was another acquisition by Tony Binns, the heifer calf at £300to D Ulliot, Scarborough.

The show was sponsored animal feed manufacturer BOCM Pauls, with the champion also becoming Skipton-based Stanforths Butchers ‘Calf of the Week.’
