Ballymena British Blues Brilliant!

“British Blues brought out at Ballymena Show 2010 were truly brilliant,” commented Scottish judge Andy Ryder from Annanwater.

“The champion shown by Zara Chestnutt of Bushmills was unbelievably good. I had seen her before as an impressive heifer, but she has developed into a prime example of a British Blue cow. No wonder she went on to become reserve interbreed beef champion.

“Zara’s Clougher Herd also produced the breed reserve champion and took home first prize from three of the five British Blue classes at Ballymena as well as coming second in the best pair of beef animals event. I was not surprised to hear this university student won the NI 2009 British Blue Herd of the Year award.

“Anyone with a love of good livestock would be well advised to mark in their diary Friday, Aug 13, when the Chestnutt Family host an open night for the British Blue NI Club.”

Andy Ryder also asserted that there was ‘not a bad beast’ on show in the well supported British Blue classes at Ballymena.

“The number of young people taking part in NI Club events is a real delight and this sheer enthusiasm of Ulster breeders for showing their stock is a lesson other regions could take to heart.

“In Ballymena we had good stock well shown by people with a real love of livestock. A day that ended on another high for the breed when David Lowry judging the parade of all cattle placed the British Blues first.”

David, erstwhile auctioneer at Saintfield Mart before forsaking Co Down for a larger farm in Lanarkshire over 20 years ago, also praised the professionalism of Blue breeders in exhibiting eye-catching stock.

The great mobility of British Blues on parade with all the other breeds greatly impressing David, who also noted their eye catching shape and frame that carries extra beef to make more money. The reason why so many dairy and suckler herd owners say a Blue bull is best for them.
