Open Calf Show
Wednesday 23rd February 2011 The Border British Blue Club staged their Twelfth annual open calf show on Wednesday 23rd February at Borderway Mart, Carlisle when nearly all of the 27 catalogued entries were forward for judging. This was made up of 14 males and 13 females all UK born pedigree registered calves born on or after 1st January 2010. The club would like to thank the sponsors of this event, Embryonics for the prize money, Harrison and Hetherington Ltd for the catalogue and the premises, Massey Bros. (Feeds) for the Perpetual Shield awarded to the champion calf and Norbreck Genetics for the Perpetual Shield for the winner of the young handler class.
The Judge Paul Walker, Crackley Bank Herd had the very difficult task of judging the calves and commented the standard of calves was very high - showing great promise for the future of the breed.
The male and overall championship was awarded to Carrick Primestock, Lyonpark, Maybole, Ayrshire with their single entry Lyonpark Fortitude ET a January 2010 son out of the Empire D’Ochain (IS) and Annanwater Wispa ET flush.
Steve & Claire Pattinson, Kinkry Hill Farm, Roadhead, Carlisle took the reserve male championship with a strong Bluegrass Cyclone son, Kelowna Ferdinand a March 2010 bull naturally born out of a Dafydd D’Ochain daughter. The female and reserve overall championship was awarded to Blair & Shona Comrie, The Beeches, Stonebyres Mains Farm, Stonebyres, Lanark with Stonebyres Fifi ET a May 2010 daughter out of a Ballygrange Alex and Stonebyres Caprice ET flush.
WW & WW Jones, Henfache, Llanrhaeaor YM, Nr Oswestry, Powys took the reserve female championship with Tanat Friendly ET a January 2010 daughter out of the Bringlee Waldo and Burton Ulrika ET flush.
Malcolm Telfer and Helen Claxton, Newton High House, Stocksfield, Northumberland won the Progeny group with two Bringlee Blackstar ET calves. The first was a male calf Newton Blues Figoro ET (3rd in his class) and the second a heifer Newton Blues Felicity ET (2nd in her class). The reserve progeny group went to two Bluegrass Cyclone (SR) ET calves shown by two different exhibitors. The first was a male calf Kelowna Ferdinand shown by Steve Pattinson (1st in his class and reserve male champion), and the second, a heifer Sharplaw Fudge ET shown by Mick Gamble and Sarah Rigg (3rd in her class). There were 9 young handlers taking part, partly due to the half term break. It was great to see them all taking it seriously but it was Issie Hartley who went on to clinch the Norbreck Perpetual Trophy once again. In second place was Lucy Corner, third place was Thomas Hartley and fourth place was Kelly Blackwood.
Class prize winners were as follows:
